We terrorize millions of vulnerable and defenseless animals daily with painful shockings, beatings, brandings, debeakings, castrations, ear notchings, nose bashings, and by forcing them to watch the killing of other animals before they are killed.
As we terrorize so we increasingly fear the shadow of terrorism, and we pour billions of dollars into campaigns to “prevent terrorism.”

We steal from and deceive animals on a massive scale: we steal their babies, their bodies, their milk, their eggs, their honey and their lives, and we deceive them with hooks, lures, nets and slaughterhouse tunnels. 
We find that we live in a society increasingly rife with deceit and theft, where predatory capitalism and sophisticated advertising work together to create a climate that legitimizes deceit in the name of profit, and fraudulent cunning in the name of return on investment.

Foie Gras

Fatty duck livers from Hudson Valley Foie Gras are served at Gordon Ramsay at the London, a New York City restaurant licensed by Chef Ramsay. 
HVFG condemns ducks to huge, dark sheds, where there is no water for them to bathe or swim in or eat from. They are denied any opportunity to live naturally like ducks. 

After weeks of being force-fed, the ducks are hung upside down and their throats are slit. Many ducks sent to slaughter by the cruel foie gras industry are still conscious as their throats are cut and they bleed to death. At HVFG, some 15,000 ducks die every year before they can be slaughtered. Even though a manager claims that the ducks “don’t get sick,” 41 birds, on average, drop dead every day. 

Some ducks’ organs burst on foie gras factory farms. Experts have found that force-fed ducks also die of throat injuries, liver failure, or heat stress or because they can’t reach drinking water—all direct results of force-feeding. Some die of aspiration pneumonia, which occurs when the grain is forced down into the ducks’ lungs.

Just when I thought I knew all the common, standard industry practices in dairy farming, I find something even more bizarre and cruel. The sound in this video is said to be “turned off” since it is for “trade show purposes” but one wonders if the sound of the cows confined to stalls and having their udders torched would reveal how unpleasant this experience is for the animals. The claim that the cows feel no pain from having a flame in contact with their sensitive udders is “udderly” ridiculous. We share the same kind of pain receptors with cows.

The video justifies the torching of cows’ udders as follows:

“The UdderSinge uses a low temperature flame passed 2-4″ below the udder and belly that removes hair quickly and painlessly. Removing hair aids in creating a healthier cow by reducing the occurrence of mastitis in the cow’s udder.

Mastitis is a painful disease that causes painful swelling and infection in the udder and is potentially fatal for the cow. Removing udder hair decreases somatic cell counts [blood cells] in milk thus making the product safer for the consumer.”

- A Life of Confinement
While at the racetrack, dogs live a life of nearly endless confinement, suffer serious injuries, and are sometimes killed when they are no longer profitable.

- Dogs Suffer Serious Injuries
Thousands of dogs are seriously injured each year at commercial racetracks, including dogs that suffer broken legs, cardiac arrest, spinal cord paralysis and broken necks. Unfortunately, not all of these injuries are reported to the public because some states do not even keep records on the number of dogs injured each year.

- Dogs are Killed When They are No Longer ProfitableThousands of dogs are killed when they are injured or are no longer fast enough to be profitable
According to the pro-racing National Greyhound Association, an estimated 5,000 dogs were killed in 2003.

- Dogs Are Transported in a Dangerous Manner
Because dogs typically compete at several racetracks during their career, professional haulers transport large numbers of dogs from one racetrack to another. During this process, dogs are transported in cramped conditions, and in some cases undergo cross-country trips in unventilated, aluminum trailers or rental vans. According to Care of the Racing Greyhound , an industry handbook, transportation over long distances can cause dogs to suffer from dehydration, weight variation, and exhaustion.In recent years, there have been several media-documented cases of racing dogs dying during transport. For example, in 2003 two dogs died en route from Oregon to Oklahoma.

- Dogs Race in Extreme Weather Conditions
At commercial racetracks, dogs race on the hottest days of summer and the coldest days of winter. These extreme weather conditions can contribute to racing injuries.

- Dogs are Trained With Live Animals, Such as Rabbits
Some members of the dog racing industry believe that training dogs with live animals, such as rabbits, causes them to run faster when competing. While the industry has publicly denounced this practice, it does still occur. In 2002 a greyhound breeder and owner had his state license suspended after he was caught using domestic rabbits to train his dogs. At least 180 rabbits were found at his kennel in rural Arizona. In 2011, a Texas greyhound trainer surrendered his license after he was caught on video using live rabbits to train dogs.

- Some Trainers Give Dogs Performance Enhancing Drugs 
Because commercial dog tracks are dependent on gambling revenue, there is always a risk that the integrity of races will be compromised by the use of performance enhancing drugs.
In 2002, Wisconsin state officials secretly filmed a greyhound trainer injecting 11 dogs before races with a foreign substance they believed to be boldenone, an anabolic steroid derived from testosterone. In a separate case, 119 dogs tested positive for cocaine at Florida racetracks between 2001 and 2003. Unfortunately, the state refused to investigate how these drug-positive dogs had ingested cocaine.

Ad last I’d like mentioning the latest fatality, a young brindle male greyhound named Kokoro, who was injured and destroyed at this track on March 27th 2013.

Is this the worst case of animal cruelty ever? Dog shot 40 times in head, tied up and buried alive… but survives

The discovery of a dog that was buried alive up to its nose after being shot in the head 40 times has led to calls for Malta to reform its animal welfare laws. 

The crossbreed mongrel, which was named Star by her rescuers, was found near the city of Birzebbuga by animal welfare officers investigating an unrelated case. 

After hearing whimpering coming from beneath a wooden board with a tree stump placed on top of it to weigh it down, officers were confronted with the distressing sight of a dog’s face buried in the dirt.
